Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences

Admission requirements for the degree programmeTo be able to profitably follow the 2nd cycle degree programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, students must possess the following knowledge:- university-level knowledge of Cellular and Molecular Biology:university-level knowledge of Mathematicsuniversity-level knowledge of Chemistry and Biochemistryuniversity-level knowledge of Physicsuniversity-level knowledge of GeneticsAdmission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is also subject to the possession of the following curricular requirements:1. A 1st cycle degree in one of the following classes, or other suitable qualification obtained abroad:ex Italian Ministerial Decree no. 270: Class L-2 Biotechnologies, Class L-13 Biological Sciences, Class L-29 Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, class LM-13 Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy;ex.D.M. 509/99: Class 1 Biotechnologies, Class 12 Biological Sciences, Class 24 Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, Class 14/S Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy;Previous five-year degree programme system: Biotechnologies, Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical technology, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry.2. or shall have acquired, in the last eight calendar years:At least 15 CFU credits in one or more of the following scientific-disciplinary fields: FIS/01-FIS/07, MAT/01-MAT/09, CHIM/01-CHIM/11 and at least 40 CFU in one or more of the following subject areas: BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/14, BIO/18, BIO/19.In addition to the set curricular requirements, admission to the 2nd cycle degree programme is in any case subject to the assessment of personal competencies and skills by a Board appointed by the Degree Programme Board and considering the candidate's curriculum, possibly followed by an interview.If no degree or the above-mentioned credits have been obtained, admission to the 2nd Cycle Degree Programme is subject to assessment by a Board to ascertain the required skills and competencies through the assessment of the candidate's curriculum. If the Board considers the level of the candidates' knowledge and skills to be satisfactory, they will be admitted for further assessment of competencies and skills, through the analysis of their curriculum, possibly followed by an interview.The Board will set a calendar for interviews, which will be published on the University portal. The entrance exam procedures are decided by the Degree Programme Board and published on the University portal. Students possessing the curricular requirements but who are in any of the following conditions are exempted from the assessment of competencies and skills:- students applying to opt from the degree programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology class 9/S Medical, Veterinary, Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, or the 2nd cycle degree programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies - class LM/9 running under the previous degree system;- students enrolling after withdrawal from the degree programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology class 9/S Medical, Veterinary, Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies, or the 2nd cycle degree programme in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies - class LM/9.Admission to the degree programme is subject to the assessment of knowledge and skills in the English language. The Degree Programme may require students to recover any initial deficit in their language skills if they are assessed to below level B1 on admission.A special Admissions session may be held for international students, with a Board appointed to assess the candidates' personal competencies and skills; this session will be compatible with the schedule established in the call for applications for study grants (which indicatively expires in May).International students who pass the above-mentioned assessment are exempted from the following assessment of their personal competencies and skills required for other students.

Programme profile

2nd cycle graduates in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies are highly skilled experts in the design and implementation of analysis and research activities, technological and experimental research, research and development in biotechnologies applied to the healthcare sector and in particular to the design, characterisation and formulation of innovative and biotechnological pharmaceuticals.In fact, only three subject areas of the nine listed in the class 9M table have been selected for the allocation of learning credits in the degree programme course units. These areas are: biotechnological subjects common to the “molecular biotechnologies” macro-area and pharmaceutical subjects in the “biotechnologies applied in the pharmaceutical sector” macro-area. This assures full specificity of the programme compared to other 2nd cycle degree programmes activated in the same class, 9M. The outcomes also aim to fill any learning gaps in these basic subject areas (cf. in the field of “Basic subjects applied to biotechnologies”), and to research topics in these areas which support the specific training of the graduates and teach the integrated and critical use of experimental and technical knowledge in the typical complex experiments of pharmaceutical biotechnologies.The degree programme covers two macro-areas, molecular biotechnologies and biotechnologies applied to the pharmaceutical sector. The degree programme has compulsory attendance and runs integrated courses of a theoretical and experimental nature, which provide students with:- in-depth knowledge of the structural-functional relations of macromolecular complexes and proteins- in-depth knowledge of the cellular, molecular and functional complexity of biological systems- advanced knowledge of the molecular and genetic mechanisms of disease- advanced methods of genomic, proteomic and bioinformatic analysis of organisms relevant to the health field- solid knowledge of pharmaceutical biotechnologies to trace the pharmaco-toxicological profile of therapeutic agents at molecular and cellular level- bioinformatic, structural biologic and genomic methodologies for the identification of innovative therapeutic targets- chemical and computational methodologies for the identification of active molecules on molecular targets of therapeutic interest- in-depth knowledge of industrial processes for the development of biotechnological products and their formulation in therapeutic and diagnostic preparations for human use- in-depth knowledge of biotechnological drug analysis technologies- development methodologies of molecular nanostructures for the analysis, monitoring and treatment of human disease- solid knowledge of the nano-formulation of biotechnological drugs.2nd cycle graduates in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies:- possess the professional competencies used in research laboratories working in gene expression and manipulation, genomic, proteomic and bioinformatic analysis, monitoring of the presence of genetically modified organisms, design, development, formulation, production and analysis of innovative and nano-biotechnological drugs, and the management and quality control of fermentation systems, in biomedical, diagnostic, environmental and nutritional fields;- can design cellular models for the development of new nano-biotechnological drugs;- can successfully interact with commercial organisations and documentation bodies working in biotechnological production;- possess the skills and knowledge required to continue with further studies (PhD programmes, 2nd level university master's programmes, specialisation schools).
